Emotional Mastery

By IICT Member Jeremy Walker.

Emotions are complex as they have both physical and mental components.

There are thousands of different types of emotions, but usually we only experience a dozen of these on a weekly basis. Scientists find emotions difficult to study, as they are experienced subjectively by each person. Some say emotions are the language of the soul. I believe emotions are guidance from within to return to a more balanced way of living and to bring us back to truth and love.

Many of the ways people try to deal with their emotions is to change how they feel in the moment. This is a short term technique to change our state. This is most useful when we need to be functional at work, at home and with family. Changing state allows us to be at our peak, we use our body, our thoughts, or an outside stimuli to change how we feel for a short burst.

Some examples of superficial ways to change state:

  • Coffee.
  • Exercise.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Deep breathing.
  • Distraction.

The next level up in emotional mastery is dealing with an emotion directly, or the problem associated with an emotion. This method is different to just altering our state, because we are taking action to change our environment and our response to the environment. Dealing with the emotion directly can result in; awareness of emotional patterns, expressing our feelings and can at times resolve the patterns underlying the emotion, but rarely.

Talking to a Psychologist or counsellor may help you deal with an emotional situation. The thing these practitioners often don’t help with, is dealing with the automatic responses in the subconscious mind. The core issue behind an emotional response is the area to work on to clear a pattern for good.

Some examples of dealing with an emotion:

  • Changing your environment (such as leaving a difficult job or partner).
  • Using conscious effort to respond differently.
  • Crying and expression.
  • Speaking with a psychologist.
  • Changing your routine to include more relaxation, positive thinking and doing what you love.

Working with the subconscious mind to change emotional patterns. This is the area to work on if you have persistent negative emotions, that keep coming back. Changing your state or dealing directly with the issue may not work, if you do not work at the subconscious level too. When emotional reaction has become a habit over months or years, it will take deeper work.

You want to find something that works on your subconscious responses. These practices solve problems that rational thinking cannot solve. This makes sense logically, no one decides to be in grief, anger or depression. It happens automatically as a response from the deeper mind. You can work with the following practices to experience freedom from negative emotional patterns.

Some examples of practices that work on the subconscious level:

  • Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong.
  • Hypnotherapy.
  • Demartini Method.
  • Therapies like acupuncture and psychosomatic therapy.
  • Spiritual work. Light work and shadow work.

Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong are not like other workouts. These ancient mind-body practices produce more energy than they consume. When we practice Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, we feel calm, invigorated and clear-headed. These energy exercises help us to process emotions and balance the left and right sides of our brain. By deepening the mind-body connection with mindful breathing, stretches, postures and meditation, these ancient practices encourage our innate healing capacities to flourish.

Hypnotherapy can help people break out of old patterns that no longer serve them. Your subconscious mind controls your habits and automaticresponses. When this part of your mind wants the same thing you do, you get results without having to think about it. The goal of any hypnotherapy is to help you do things without having to use willpower, or battle with your own mind. After effective communication with the subconscious mind, the change becomes something that is natural for you.

The Demartini Method deals with the core issues behind emotional responses. The Demartini Method is a systematic pre-determined series of mental questions directed toward assisting an individual to feel present, certainty and gratitude. The work neutralises an individual’s emotional charges, balances his or her mental and physical reactions, opens his or her heart and clears his or her mind. The Demartini Method is a reproducible science enabling individuals to discover the underlying order governing their apparent daily chaos.

An example of a working on a core issue at a deeper level: I had general anxiety and social anxiety for more than 15 years. Certain situations would set off an anxiety response and simply trying to will it away wasn’t working. I would have anxiety about people judging me, going to the shops, visiting cafes and more. 2 things that made a difference in stopping my anxiety pattern, were the exercises Yoga and Tai Chi (which I did 100 classes of in 2014) and a therapy process called the Demartini Method which deals with core issues. I used the Demartini Method several times to clear emotionally charged events from my past. The result, is that the anxiety response is just not there now.

Emotional mastery means you still feel every emotion from time to time. It means you allow yourself to express it without judgement. Emotional mastery means you have a strategy to deal with emotions at the subconscious or psychosomatic level. It means emotional patterns don’t stick around so long, they pass more quickly.

If emotions are persistent for weeks or months, it’s time to work at a deeper level.
